Kaleidescope and Cantarice

September 16, 2018 //  by Lynn Tulip//  Leave a Comment

Saturday / 1:45-2:15pm / URC

CANTATRICE began back in 2004 when 90 singers signed up (yes 90!) on the first day. Its sister choir in Horsham began three months later. Over the years we have performed a huge variety of music from pop through to classical, singing at Open Air Gigs (Steynings own Live Lounge) to the illustrious venues of Chichester Cathedral to St Clement Danes in the Strand, London. Last year we had great success in the Mid-Somerset Festival winning in a class of 12 choirs – we celebrated the life of Laura Skuce (our late pianist) in March this year and travelled to London to take part in the International Sangerstevne in May .

We bring you a themed programme entitled ‘The Atmosphere’ to feature, Voice on the wind (Quartell), I got the sun in the morning, I dreamed of rain, Singing in the Rain and September by the famous group Earth, Wind and Fire.

Kaleidoscope Singers

Kaleidoscope have a wonderful bond not only musically but as friends. They enjoy a very varied mix of music, some quite challenging but all performed to a high standard with flair and style. We started our musical journey in 2002 at St Mary’s House Bramber and have gone on to sing at many venues including Petworth House, All Saints Lindifeld, Drill Hall Horsham, St Mary’s House Bramber,  Brighton Paviliion (& loads more!) but most recently St Katherine Cree, London as part of the Brandenburg Choral Festival. Later this year we then present a concert in our home, Steyning Methodist Church, where we invite you to enjoy our songs and readings then partake of a light lunch on Saturday 20 October.

Didgeridoo – Tall Paul

September 15, 2018 //  by Lynn Tulip//  Leave a Comment

Saturday

Performance: 10:45-11:15am / URC

Workshops: 12:30-1:30pm and 2:30-3:30pm / The Red Lion

Paul Cook, aka didge Tall Paul  grew up in a village just outside of Dartford and has lived in Kent for most of his life; and after doing a fair bit of travelling including Australia of course, has now been living in Gravesend with his wife and two children for the past 15 years.

He has been playing didgeridoo for about 25 years and is now considered to be one of the foremost didgeridoo performers in the UK with several appearances on radio stations across the country, television and also producing music in film such as Tom Clancy‘s “Remainder.”

Lindfield Arts Festival are delighted that he will be performing in the United Reform Church at 10.45am -11.15am on Saturday 22nd September and if you would like to learn to play the didgeridoo, there will be two workshops during the afternoon in the Red Lion back room.  One at 12.30pm and the other at 2.30pm. Both will be an hour long.

Paul has produced three didgeridoo albums over his many years of playing: Hollow,  Raspberry ripple and his latest album 10 tunes from 22 years of tongue twisters.

Most of you love the sound of the didgeridoo but have never had the opportunity to learn how to play this wonderful instrument……well now’s your chance ! Paul has been playing this instrument for over 25 years and teaching it at festivals and in schools for about 15 years so come and join him and he will break it down into small easy to learn steps.

He will be starting with the very basic drone techniques working with bending the note higher and lower. Then teaching you how to use vocal calls that are used for animal sounds within the Australian outback and finishing with making the mysterious Circular breathing which allows players to keep rhythms flowing indefinitely easy to understand and achievable.

For all of you that can already play there will be plenty of opportunity for some expert tips whether it be help with building rhythms, improving vocals or the breathing techniques that are the structural points of all styles of play that you hear from famous didgeridoo players.

Within all of this Paul will be touching on a little information on aboriginal Australian culture. Certainly worthwhile joining him

Paul started making didgeridoos around about the year 2000 and his instruments are widely respected by players across the world. He makes to different styles of didgeridoo. One is with imported wood from Australia which has been termite eaten and then shaped with the use of very long chisels and the other is with a variety of native English would known as split wood didgeridoos.

He has been teaching didgeridoo for many years within Gravesend didgeridoo club which meets every fourth Saturday of the month, runs workshops at a large variety of festivals and visits schools to teach didgeridoo and aboriginal Australian culture. Throughout the year he runs a stall at festivals selling and teaching didgeridoo and many other musical instruments from around the world.

Paul also runs his own festival called elementary didgeridoo Festival which is now in its fourth year, This is a world music Festival with music from Africa, India, Slovakia ,Tibet to name but a few and of course a fair bit of didgeridoo.

For details on all that Paul does you can visit his websites at www.didgetallpaul.co.uk ; or for his Festival  www.elementarydidgefest.com
